This is a list of a significant portion of the software that I rely upon for work. Well, some are for entertainment too. Running multiple systems and a couple different OS (including a few separate versions on Windows) often necessitates using freely available open-source software. The programs in this selection will likely be most useful for students, web and graphic designers, as well as other professionals.
There are advantages and disadvantages in using open-source software, as there are with using proprietary software. The software on this list was chosen on a number of factors, but in no sort of scientific manner, and no single factor or combination factors was dispositive. Some of the factors considered were: ease of installation and use, functionality, stability, installation size, cross-platform compatibility, portability, and availability of support information.
I have used all of the different programs listed here, though I do not profess to be an expert like the people who contribute their work to these projects. If you enjoy using a program, consider contributing something to the project.
Powerful and compact file compression and archive manager. Can extract and pack to five different archive file formats, including the most common: .zip, .gz, and .tar. One of the best things about 7-zip is how quickly is runs. Another advantage it has over other file archive programs is its sleek and simple user interface (plus, excellent integration with right-click menus in Windows).
Tool for tracking time spent on tasks to the minute. Accessible through a protected web page (which means you can access it on a smartphone), and through an
iGoogle Gadget. Relatively easy set-up even with extra steps, but is very useful and takes a lot of effort out of keeping track of your time working.
Open-source screen capture software that can record your computer screen, or just a portion of it, to .avi, .swf and other video files. Includes auto-panning, audio recording, file quality selector, and the ability to add captions.
GIMP is a full-featured graphics editor with vector tools and support for a wide variety of file formats. Many advanced functions built-in and it is accompanied by a large repository of community developed plug-ins. GIMP can most likely easily replace many paid graphics editing programs.
KeePass is a robust, high security (military strength encryption) password manager with a variety of contributed client programs and extensions for accessing the password database on a multitude of operating systems. Support for the
iPhone is in the works. A full install version and a portable version are available. Great built-in password generator. Synchronizing copies of a password database file is very easy.
A basic, yet powerful, file and folder re-namer. Good for organizing large sets of files, like photo collections. Small install size and stable performance. Has a bevy of options for renaming files like, recursive searching through folders, auto-numbering, file extension manipulations, etc.
Complete desktop publishing suite from Sun Microsystems with more than enough functionality on its own to be the only office software you need, extending by a large set of contributed modules. The relatively small install includes word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and database programs among others. Has the ability to read and write to Microsoft Office file formats without the need for a converter, and can export to PDF.
Panda, which also makes anti-virus and other security software for sale, offers this novel approach to anti-virus protection. Threats are reported in real-time across the cloud of users, so that computers in the cloud can be protected without waiting for a definition update. The install size is lightweight and it does not put a large burden on computer resources.
Thunderbird is the open-source email client from Mozilla, the entity that created the
Firefox web browser. Very easy to set-up email accounts, it includes a setup profile for Gmail accounts. Lightweight installation and user-friendly interface.
VLC can play a huge variety of video (and audio) file formats without having to download individual codecs, and supports a few additional proprietary codecs. Very minimal user interface that does not interfere with the enjoyment of your media. Cool feature allows you to use your mouse wheel to 'scroll' through a video.
Solid FTP client for Windows with SecureFTP, SSH and SCP support, and comes in a portable version in addition to the full install version. Easy to use, even for someone who has not used a FTP client. Includes PuTTY key generator. WinSCP is nearly a must-have for Windows users.
