SEO basics: putting the 'do' in voodoo

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a loaded term, certainly not very descriptive of the process that it actually entails. For some, SEO is their bread and butter; for others, it is reviled as black magic replete with unmentionable rituals.

From my perspective: I have found that while there is some openness in the SEO community, there is mostly a lack of useful information for DIYers, in-house personnel, and freelancers. As well, I imagine that it can be frustrating for anybody seeking help to evaluate companies who are selling SEO services.

The crux of search engine optimization is that it is no single thing. It involves a multi-faceted approach and requires creativity to explore the avenues to successfully reaching your SEO goals. I believe that SEO starts with a site design and content, and almost comes as more of an afterthought to first creating a solid website. In other words, you cannot have search engine optimization without having geared your design and content with SEO in mind.

Since there are several levels of the SEO process, this article will be divided roughly on these topic areas, which can be accessed below. Keep in mind that it is a holistic process and it is worthwhile to review as much material as possible. SEO should be done correctly from the beginning, as stated above, starting with the design process. For example, if you already have an existing website you may find yourself editing your design and/or content to achieve your goals.

The first step is identifying what you want to accomplish. Are you hurting in search rank for your keywords? Trying to increase traffic? Paying too much for your keyword ads? Of course, you may just want to improve the look and feel of your site. The goals can be broad to very detailed: the framework you create will help you identify the specific tasks that need to be done.
